GATE subject-wise weightage for every paper: CS, DA, EC, EE, ME, CE and AE
In every GATE paper, General Aptitude is 15 marks. In six of the seven papers here, Engineering Mathematics is officially 13 marks; DA has no fixed share, but its mathematics sections averaged 35 marks. Nothing else is fixed, so the subject-wise split below is counted from 71 official papers, question by question. Pick your paper to see its subjects, their averages and how far single papers move.

GATE CS: Computer Science & Information Technology23 official papers, 2014 to 2026 · largest subject: Programming and Data Structures (10.9 marks on average)
- Programming and Data Structures has the highest average, 10.9 marks, ranging from 6 to 18 in a single paper.
- Engineering Mathematics is officially 13 marks. Tagging each question by the topic it tests, we counted 12 to 24 marks of mathematics topics per paper (16.5 on average).
- Steadiest of the larger subjects: Computer Networks, always 6 to 10 marks.
- Biggest swing: Programming and Data Structures, from 6 marks (2021 S1) to 18 (2015 S3).
- MCQs, the only questions with negative marks, made up 42 to 71 of the 100 marks. The official keys awarded one question to all candidates; it is counted under its subject like any other.
- GATE 2027 syllabus: Computer Networks is cut down to its core, and Digital Logic and Computer Organization now ask for design (ALU, control unit, memory interfacing) rather than just concepts.

What to do with this
Use the averages to plan, not to skip. Cover every subject, start with the large ones, and then let your own results set the order: a subject where you lose marks in timed practice matters more than its average.

The GATE Reality Check is 15 past-paper questions from your subject, free with an account. Your report shows where you lost marks.
Take the Reality CheckQuestions students ask
Does IIT publish the subject-wise weightage for GATE?
Only for fixed blocks. The GATE 2027 brochure (section 7.3) gives General Aptitude 15 marks in every paper, and Engineering Mathematics 13 marks in CS, EC, EE, ME, CE and AE. DA has no fixed mathematics share. The rest of each paper is not split by subject, so subject-wise figures, including these, are counted from past papers.
Is the GATE weightage the same every year?
No. A subject can move a lot between papers. In Aerospace, Flight Mechanics carried 4 to 18 marks in the 2020 to 2026 papers. Averages over several papers are steadier than any single paper, which is why each table shows the average next to the lowest and highest values.
Can I skip a low-weightage subject?
It is risky. Most subjects in these tables carried at least a few marks in every paper, and several small subjects had one paper where they were much bigger. Skipping a subject gives up its marks for certain; the weightage only tells you how many marks you are likely to give up.
Which GATE papers does this cover?
