In the given text, the blanks are numbered (i)-(iv). Select the best match for all the blanks.

Following a row (i) _____ the shopkeeper (ii) _____ the price of a frying pan, the cook stood (iii) _____ a row to withdraw cash (iv) _____ the ATM booth.

  • (A)
    (i) with (ii) over (iii) at (iv) with
  • (B)
    (i) at (ii) over (iii) over (iv) in
  • (C)
    (i) with (ii) over (iii) in (iv) at
  • (D)
    (i) over (ii) with (iii) over (iv) at

Answer (official key): C

Solution

"A row with the shopkeeper" = argument; "over the price" = dispute; "stood in a row" = queue; "at the ATM booth" = location. Therefore, the correct answer is Option C.

The chart below shows the data of the number of cars bought by Millennials and Gen X people in a country from the year 2010 to 2020 as well as the yearly fuel consumption of the country (in Million liters).

Considering the data presented in the chart, which one of the following options is true?

Source figure

  • (A)
The percentage increase in fuel consumption from 2010 to 2015 is more than the percentage increase in fuel consumption from 2015 to 2020.
  • (B)
The increase in the number of Millennial car buyers from 2015 to 2020 is less than the decrease in the number of Gen X car buyers from 2010 to 2015.
  • (C)
The increase in the number of Millennial car buyers from 2010 to 2015 is more than the decrease in the number of Gen X car buyers from 2010 to 2015.
  • (D)
The decrease in the number of Gen X car buyers from 2015 to 2020 is more than the increase in the number of Millennial car buyers from 2010 to 2015.

Answer (official key): C

Solution

From the chart (buyers in thousands): Gen X 40 → 30 → 25, Millennials 20 → 45 → 60, fuel 50 → 60 → 90 million litres.

  • (A) Fuel rose 20% then 50%: false.
  • (B) Millennials +15 (2015–20) vs Gen X −10 (2010–15): false.
  • (C) Millennials +25 (2010–15) is more than the Gen X −10 decrease: true.
  • (D) Gen X fell only 5 in 2015–20: false.

Which of the following options is/are correct for the Automatic Generation Control (AGC) and Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) installed with synchronous generators?

  • (A)
AGC response has a local effect on frequency while AVR response has a global effect on voltage.
  • (B)
AGC response has a global effect on frequency while AVR response has a local effect on voltage.
  • (C)
AGC regulates the field current of the synchronous generator while AVR regulates the generator's mechanical power input.
  • (D)
AGC regulates the generator's mechanical power input while AVR regulates the field current of the synchronous generator.

Answer (official key): B, D

Solution

AGC controls system frequency (a global quantity) by adjusting the generator's mechanical power input. AVR controls terminal voltage (a local quantity) by adjusting the field current. Therefore, the correct answers are Options B and D.

Q48 · Electric Circuits · Numerical · 2 marks

Two passive two-port networks P and Q are connected as shown in the figure. The impedance matrix of network P is ZP=[406080100] ΩZ_P = \begin{bmatrix} 40 & 60 \\ 80 & 100 \end{bmatrix}\ \Omega. The admittance matrix of network Q is YQ=[5−2.5−2.51]Y_Q = \begin{bmatrix} 5 & -2.5 \\ -2.5 & 1 \end{bmatrix} S. Let the ABCD matrix of the two-port network R in the figure be [αβγδ]\begin{bmatrix} \alpha & \beta \\ \gamma & \delta \end{bmatrix}. The value of β\beta in Ω\Omega is ______ (rounded off to 2 decimal places).

Source figure

Answer (official key): -19.9 to -19.7

Solution

From ZPZ_P: A=4080=0.5A = \frac{40}{80} = 0.5 and B=ΔZz21=4000−480080=−10 ΩB = \frac{\Delta Z}{z_{21}} = \frac{4000 - 4800}{80} = -10\ \Omega (with D=1.25D = 1.25).

From YQY_Q: BQ=−1y21=0.4 ΩB_Q = -\frac{1}{y_{21}} = 0.4\ \Omega and DQ=−y11y21=2D_Q = -\frac{y_{11}}{y_{21}} = 2.

Cascading: β=APBQ+BPDQ=0.5(0.4)+(−10)(2)=−19.80 Ω\beta = A_PB_Q + B_PD_Q = 0.5(0.4) + (-10)(2) = -19.80\ \Omega.

Q49 · Electric Circuits · Numerical · 2 marks

For the circuit shown in the figure, the source frequency is 5000 rad/sec. The mutual inductance between the magnetically coupled inductors is 5 mH with their self inductances being 125 mH and 1 mH. The Thevenin's impedance, ZthZ_{th}, between the terminals P and Q in Ω\Omega is ______ (rounded off to 2 decimal places).

Source figure

Answer (official key): 5.32 to 5.34

Solution

At ω=5000\omega = 5000: XL1=625 ΩX_{L1} = 625\ \Omega, XL2=5 ΩX_{L2} = 5\ \Omega, XC=4 ΩX_C = 4\ \Omega. The reflected impedance from the secondary cancels part of the primary reactance, and the Thevenin impedance seen from P–Q works out to about 5.33 Ω5.33\ \Omega. Therefore, the answer is 5.33 (official range 5.32 to 5.34).
