Q3 · General Aptitude · MCQ · 1 mark

For positive integers pp and qq, with

pq≠1,\frac{p}{q}\ne1, (pq)p/q=p(p/q−1).\left(\frac{p}{q}\right)^{p/q} = p^{(p/q-1)}.

Then,

  • (A)
    qp=pqq^p=p^q
  • (B)
    qp=p2qq^p=p^{2q}
  • (C)
    q=p\sqrt q=\sqrt p
  • (D)
    qp=pq\sqrt[p]{q}=\sqrt[q]{p}

Answer (official key): A

Solution

Starting from

(pq)p/q=pp/q−1,\left(\frac pq\right)^{p/q}=p^{p/q-1},

write the left side as

pp/qq−p/q.p^{p/q}q^{-p/q}.

Dividing both sides by pp/q−1p^{p/q-1} gives

p q−p/q=1.p\,q^{-p/q}=1.

Hence

p=qp/q.p=q^{p/q}.

Raise both sides to the power qq:

pq=qp.p^q=q^p.

Therefore,

qp=pq.q^p=p^q.

Therefore, the correct answer is Option A.

Q4 · General Aptitude · MCQ · 1 mark

Which one of the given options is a possible value of xx in the following sequence?

3, 7, 15, x, 63, 127, 2553,\ 7,\ 15,\ x,\ 63,\ 127,\ 255
  • (A)
    35
  • (B)
    40
  • (C)
    45
  • (D)
    31

Answer (official key): D

Solution

Each term is obtained from the previous term by

an+1=2an+1.a_{n+1}=2a_n+1.

Thus

3→7→15→31→63→127→255.3\to7\to15\to31\to63\to127\to255.

Therefore,

x=31.x=31.

Therefore, the correct answer is Option D.

The following figure shows the arrangement of formwork for casting a cantilever RC beam.

Cantilever RC beam shores for Q17

The correct sequence of removing the Shores/Props is

  • (A)
    S1→S2→S3→S4→S5S1\to S2\to S3\to S4\to S5
  • (B)
    S5→S4→S3→S2→S1S5\to S4\to S3\to S2\to S1
  • (C)
    S3→S2→S4→S1→S5S3\to S2\to S4\to S1\to S5
  • (D)
    S3→S4→S2→S5→S1S3\to S4\to S2\to S5\to S1

Answer (official key): B

Solution

For a cantilever, the props should be removed progressively from the free end toward the fixed end. This allows the cantilever action to develop gradually without prematurely removing the support closest to the fixed end.

In the figure, S5 is at the free end and S1 is nearest the column.

Thus the sequence is

S5→S4→S3→S2→S1.S5\to S4\to S3\to S2\to S1.

Therefore, the correct answer is Option B.

Q28 · Partial Differential Equations · MSQ · 1 mark

For the following partial differential equation,

x∂2f∂x2+y∂2f∂y2=x2+y22,x\frac{\partial^2f}{\partial x^2} + y\frac{\partial^2f}{\partial y^2} = \frac{x^2+y^2}{2},

which of the following option(s) is/are CORRECT?

  • (A)
    elliptic for x>0x>0 and y>0y>0
  • (B)
    parabolic for x>0x>0 and y>0y>0
  • (C)
    elliptic for x=0x=0 and y>0y>0
  • (D)
    hyperbolic for x<0x<0 and y>0y>0

Answer (official key): A, D

Solution

For a second-order PDE

Afxx+2Bfxy+Cfyy=⋯ ,A f_{xx}+2B f_{xy}+C f_{yy}=\cdots,

classification depends on

B2−AC.B^2-AC.

Here

A=x,B=0,C=y,A=x,\qquad B=0,\qquad C=y,

so

B2−AC=−xy.B^2-AC=-xy.
  • If x>0,y>0x>0,y>0, then −xy<0-xy<0: elliptic.
  • If x=0,y>0x=0,y>0, then the discriminant is zero: parabolic, so option C is false.
  • If x<0,y>0x<0,y>0, then −xy>0-xy>0: hyperbolic.

Therefore, the correct answers are Options A and D.

Consider the data of f(x)f(x) given in the table.

ii012
xix_i123
f(xi)f(x_i)00.30100.4771

The value of f(1.5)f(1.5) estimated using second-order Newton’s interpolation formula is ______________ (rounded off to 2 decimal places).

Answer (official key): 0.16 to 0.18

Solution

The points are equally spaced with h=1h=1. Using Newton's forward formula about x0=1x_0=1,

u=1.5−11=0.5.u=\frac{1.5-1}{1}=0.5.

First differences:

Δf0=0.3010,Δf1=0.4771−0.3010=0.1761.\Delta f_0=0.3010, \qquad \Delta f_1=0.4771-0.3010=0.1761.

Second difference:

Δ2f0=0.1761−0.3010=−0.1249.\Delta^2f_0=0.1761-0.3010=-0.1249.

Therefore,

f(1.5)=f0+uΔf0+u(u−1)2Δ2f0.f(1.5) = f_0+u\Delta f_0+\frac{u(u-1)}{2}\Delta^2f_0.

Hence

f(1.5)=0+0.5(0.3010)+0.5(−0.5)2(−0.1249)≈0.1661.f(1.5) = 0+0.5(0.3010) +\frac{0.5(-0.5)}2(-0.1249) \approx0.1661.

Rounded to two decimals, the value is 0.170.17.

Therefore, the answer is 0.17 (official accepted range 0.16 to 0.18).
