Q4 · General Aptitude · MCQ · 1 mark

Given the statements:

  • P is the sister of Q.
  • Q is the husband of R.
  • R is the mother of S.
  • T is the husband of P.

Based on the above information, T is ______ of S.

  • (A)
    the grandfather
  • (B)
    an uncle
  • (C)
    the father
  • (D)
    a brother

Answer (official key): B

Solution

Under the conventional family-relation interpretation of this question, Q and R are S’s parents. P is Q’s sister, and T is P’s husband, making T an uncle of S: B. Strictly, the statements do not explicitly say Q is S’s father; the keyed relationship uses that usual family-puzzle assumption. No numerical calculation applies.

Therefore, the correct answer is B.

Q5 · General Aptitude · MCQ · 1 mark

In the diagram, R is the center of the circle. PQ and ZV are tangential to the circle. The relation among the areas of the squares PXWR, RUVZ and SPQT is

Source figure

  • (A)
Area of SPQT = Area of RUVZ = Area of PXWR
  • (B)
Area of SPQT = Area of PXWR − Area of RUVZ
  • (C)
Area of PXWR = Area of SPQT − Area of RUVZ
  • (D)
Area of PXWR = Area of RUVZ − Area of SPQT

Answer (official key): B

Solution

The radius RQRQ is perpendicular to tangent PQPQ. Thus PR2=PQ2+RQ2PR^2=PQ^2+RQ^2. The square PXWR has side PR, SPQT has side PQ, and RUVZ has side RZ, with RZ=RQRZ=RQ. Therefore ASPQT=PQ2=PR2−RZ2=APXWR−ARUVZA_{SPQT}=PQ^2=PR^2-RZ^2=A_{PXWR}-A_{RUVZ}. Hence B.

Therefore, the correct answer is B.

Q37 · Structural Engineering · MCQ · 2 marks

A semi-circular bar of radius R m, in a vertical plane, is fixed at the end G, as shown in the figure. A horizontal load of magnitude P kN is applied at the end H. The magnitude of the axial force, shear force, and bending moment at point Q for θ = 45°, respectively, are

Source figure

  • (A)
    P/2P/\sqrt2 kN, P/2P/\sqrt2 kN, PR/2PR/\sqrt2 kNm
  • (B)
    P/2P/\sqrt2 kN, P/2P/\sqrt2 kN, 0 kNm
  • (C)
    0 kN, P/2P/\sqrt2 kN, PR/2PR/\sqrt2 kNm
  • (D)
    P/2P/\sqrt2 kN, 0 kN, PR/2PR/\sqrt2 kNm

Answer (official key): A

Solution

Cut at Q and isolate segment HQ. Resolve the applied horizontal load along the tangent and normal at Q; at 45° both components have magnitude P/2P/\sqrt2. The perpendicular distance from Q to the horizontal line of action of P is Rsin⁡45∘=R/2R\sin45^\circ=R/\sqrt2, so ∣MQ∣=PR/2|M_Q|=PR/\sqrt2. Hence A. The bending moment is not zero merely because the load acts horizontally.

Therefore, the correct answer is A.

Let max⁡{a,b}\max\{a, b\} denote the maximum of two real numbers aa and bb. Which of the following statement(s) is/are TRUE about the function f(x)=max⁡{3−x,x−1}f(x) = \max\{3 - x, x - 1\}?

  • (A)
It is continuous on its domain.
  • (B)
    It has a local minimum at x = 2.
  • (C)
    It has a local maximum at x = 2.
  • (D)
It is differentiable on its domain.

Answer (official key): A, B

Solution

The branches intersect where 3−x=x−13-x=x-1, giving x=2x=2 and f=1f=1. Equivalently f(x)=1+∣x−2∣f(x)=1+|x-2|. It is continuous on all real numbers and has a strict local (also global) minimum at 2. Its left and right derivatives there are −1 and +1, so it is not differentiable throughout its domain. Hence A and B.

Therefore, the correct answers are A, B.

Consider the differential equation

dydx=4(x+2)−y\frac{dy}{dx} = 4(x + 2) - y

For the initial condition y = 3 at x = 1, the value of yy at x = 1.4 obtained using Euler’s method with a step-size of 0.2 is _________. (round off to one decimal place)

Answer (official key): 6.3 to 6.5

Solution

Euler’s update is yn+1=yn+0.2[4(xn+2)−yn]y_{n+1}=y_n+0.2[4(x_n+2)-y_n]. First, y(1.2)≈3+0.2(12−3)=4.8y(1.2)\approx3+0.2(12-3)=4.8. Next, y(1.4)≈4.8+0.2[4(3.2)−4.8]=4.8+1.6=6.4y(1.4)\approx4.8+0.2[4(3.2)-4.8]=4.8+1.6=6.4. This is the requested discrete Euler approximation, not the exact ODE solution.

Therefore, the answer lies in the range 6.3 to 6.5.
