Q4 · General Aptitude · MCQ · 1 mark

Given below are two statements and four conclusions drawn based on the statements.

Statement 1: Some bottles are cups.

Statement 2: All cups are knives.

Conclusion I: Some bottles are knives.

Conclusion II: Some knives are cups.

Conclusion III: All cups are bottles.

Conclusion IV: All knives are cups.

Which one of the following options can be logically inferred?

  • (A)
    Only conclusion I and conclusion II are correct
  • (B)
    Only conclusion II and conclusion III are correct
  • (C)
    Only conclusion II and conclusion IV are correct
  • (D)
    Only conclusion III and conclusion IV are correct

Answer (official key): A

Solution

The bottles that are cups are also knives, so I follows. Since all cups are knives, some knives are cups (II). Nothing forces all cups to be bottles (III) or all knives to be cups (IV).

Figure for GATE 2022 EE question 10 (Spatial Aptitude)

An ant is at the bottom-left corner of a grid (point P) as shown above. It aims to move to the top-right corner of the grid. The ant moves only along the lines marked in the grid such that the current distance to the top-right corner strictly decreases.

Which one of the following is a part of a possible trajectory of the ant during the movement?

  • (A)
    GATE 2022 EE question 10 (Spatial Aptitude), option A
  • (B)
    GATE 2022 EE question 10 (Spatial Aptitude), option B
  • (C)
    GATE 2022 EE question 10 (Spatial Aptitude), option C
  • (D)
    GATE 2022 EE question 10 (Spatial Aptitude), option D

Answer (official key): C

Solution

Moving left or down increases the distance to the top-right corner, so the ant can only move right or up. Path (C) uses only up and right steps. (A) and (B) contain a downward step and (D) is a closed loop.

Q25 · Analog and Digital Electronics · MCQ · 1 mark

For the circuit shown below with ideal diodes, the output will be

Figure for GATE 2022 EE question 25 (Analog and Digital Electronics)

  • (A)
    Vout=VinV_{out} = V_{in} for Vin>0V_{in} > 0
  • (B)
    Vout=VinV_{out} = V_{in} for Vin<0V_{in} < 0
  • (C)
    Vout=−VinV_{out} = -V_{in} for Vin>0V_{in} > 0
  • (D)
    Vout=−VinV_{out} = -V_{in} for Vin<0V_{in} < 0

Answer (official key): A

Solution

For Vin>0V_{in} > 0, current flows through D1D_1, down through R1R_1 and back through D2D_2, which points toward the negative terminal. Both diodes conduct, so Vout=VinV_{out} = V_{in}. For Vin<0V_{in} < 0 both diodes are reverse biased and Vout=0V_{out} = 0.

Q31 · Electric Circuits · Numerical · 1 mark

In the circuit shown below, the switch SS is closed at t=0t = 0. The magnitude of the steady state voltage, in volts, across the 6 Ω6\ \Omega resistor is _________. (round off to two decimal places).

Figure for GATE 2022 EE question 31 (Electric Circuits)

Answer (official key): 4.95 to 5.05

Solution

In steady state the 1 μF1\ \mu F branch carries no current. The 10 V source with its 2 Ω2\ \Omega resistor feeds 6 Ω∥3 Ω=2 Ω6\ \Omega \parallel 3\ \Omega = 2\ \Omega, so I=102+2=2.5I = \frac{10}{2 + 2} = 2.5 A and the voltage across the 6 Ω6\ \Omega resistor is 2.5×2=5.002.5 \times 2 = 5.00 V.

Q33 · Power Electronics · Numerical · 1 mark

The voltage at the input of an AC-DC rectifier is given by v(t)=2302sin⁡ωtv(t) = 230\sqrt{2}\sin\omega t where ω=2π×50\omega = 2\pi \times 50 rad/s. The input current drawn by the rectifier is given by

i(t)=10sin⁡(ωt−π3)+4sin⁡(3ωt−π6)+3sin⁡(5ωt−π3).i(t) = 10\sin\left(\omega t - \frac{\pi}{3}\right) + 4\sin\left(3\omega t - \frac{\pi}{6}\right) + 3\sin\left(5\omega t - \frac{\pi}{3}\right).

The input power factor, (rounded off to two decimal places), is, _________________ lag.

Answer (official key): 0.43 to 0.47

Solution

Only the fundamental carries real power. Distortion factor =10102+42+32=1011.18=0.894= \frac{10}{\sqrt{10^2 + 4^2 + 3^2}} = \frac{10}{11.18} = 0.894 and displacement factor =cos⁡60∘=0.5= \cos 60^{\circ} = 0.5, so PF =0.894×0.5=0.45= 0.894 \times 0.5 = 0.45 lag.

Is there negative marking in GATE 2022 EE?

Yes, for MCQs only. A wrong MCQ answer costs one-third of its marks (−⅓ for a 1-mark question, −⅔ for a 2-mark question). MSQ and numerical (NAT) questions have no negative marking, and an MSQ earns marks only when every correct option is chosen.

Which topics carried the most marks in GATE 2022 EE?

Outside General Aptitude, the biggest topics were Power Electronics (11 marks), Electrical Machines (10 marks), Control Systems (9 marks). The full topic-wise split is in the table on this page.

Were any GATE 2022 EE questions awarded marks to all?

No. Every question was graded with the answer in the official key.

Where does this GATE 2022 EE answer key come from?

From the official answer key published by IIT Kharagpur, which organised GATE 2022. Range answers for numerical questions and questions with more than one accepted answer are kept exactly as the key gives them.
