Figure for GATE 2022 AE question 5 (Spatial Aptitude)

Which one of the groups given below can be assembled to get the shape that is shown above using each piece only once without overlapping with each other? (rotation and translation operations may be used).

  • (A)
    GATE 2022 AE question 5 (Spatial Aptitude), option A
  • (B)
    GATE 2022 AE question 5 (Spatial Aptitude), option B
  • (C)
    GATE 2022 AE question 5 (Spatial Aptitude), option C
  • (D)
    GATE 2022 AE question 5 (Spatial Aptitude), option D

Answer (official key): B or B, C

Solution

The shape is a rectangle body with a triangular nose on top and two triangular fins at the base. The pieces must supply one rectangle and the right-shaped triangles. The official key accepts (B) or (C).

Four cities P, Q, R and S are connected through one-way routes as shown in the figure. The travel time between any two connected cities is one hour. The boxes beside each city name describe the starting time of first train of the day and their frequency of operation. For example, from city P, the first trains of the day start at 8 AM with a frequency of 90 minutes to each of R and S. A person does not spend additional time at any city other than the waiting time for the next connecting train.

If the person starts from R at 7 AM and is required to visit S and return to R, what is the minimum time required?

Figure for GATE 2022 AE question 9 (Analytical Aptitude)

  • (A)
    6 hours 30 minutes
  • (B)
    3 hours 45 minutes
  • (C)
    4 hours 30 minutes
  • (D)
    5 hours 15 minutes

Answer (official key): A

Solution

From R the only route is to Q: leave 7:00, reach Q 8:00. Q's trains run at 5, 7, 9 AM…, so leave 9:00 for P, arrive 10:00. P's trains run at 8:00, 9:30, 11:00, so leave 11:00 for S, arrive 12:00. S's trains run every 45 min from 8:00, so leave 12:30 for R, arrive 1:30 PM. Total 6 h 30 min.

For a conventional airplane in straight, level, constant velocity flight condition, which of the following condition(s) is/are possible on Euler angles (ϕ,θ,ψ)(\phi, \theta, \psi), angle of attack (α)(\alpha) and the sideslip angle (β)(\beta)?

  • (A)
    ϕ=0°,θ=2°,ψ=0°,α=2°,β=0°\phi = 0°, \theta = 2°, \psi = 0°, \alpha = 2°, \beta = 0°
  • (B)
    ϕ=5°,θ=0°,ψ=0°,α=2°,β=0°\phi = 5°, \theta = 0°, \psi = 0°, \alpha = 2°, \beta = 0°
  • (C)
    ϕ=0°,θ=3°,ψ=0°,α=3°,β=5°\phi = 0°, \theta = 3°, \psi = 0°, \alpha = 3°, \beta = 5°
  • (D)
    ϕ=0°,θ=5°,ψ=0°,α=2°,β=5°\phi = 0°, \theta = 5°, \psi = 0°, \alpha = 2°, \beta = 5°

Answer (official key): A

Solution

Straight, level, unaccelerated flight with wings level needs no sideslip and θ=α\theta = \alpha (zero flight-path angle): (A). A bank angle (B) would turn the aircraft, and sideslip with wings level (C, D) leaves an unbalanced side force.

Q50 · Aerodynamics · Numerical · 2 marks

A rotational velocity field in an air flow is given as V⃗=ay i^+bx j^\vec{V} = ay\,\hat{i} + bx\,\hat{j}, with aa = 10 s⁻¹, bb = 20 s⁻¹.

The air density is 1.0 kg/m³ and the pressure at (x,y)(x, y) = (0 m, 0 m) is 100 kPa.

Neglecting gravity, the pressure at (x,y)(x, y) = (6 m, 8 m) is _____ kPa (rounded off to nearest integer).

Answer (official key): 88 to 91

Solution

The flow is rotational, so use Euler's equation: ∂p/∂x=−ρ(u ux+v uy)=−ρabx\partial p/\partial x = -\rho(u\,u_x + v\,u_y) = -\rho abx and ∂p/∂y=−ρaby\partial p/\partial y = -\rho aby. Hence p=p0−12ρab(x2+y2)=100 000−100×100=90p = p_0 - \tfrac12\rho ab(x^2 + y^2) = 100\,000 - 100 \times 100 = 90 kPa.

Q53 · Aerodynamics · Numerical · 2 marks

In a converging duct, area and velocity at section P are 1 m² and 15 m/s, respectively. The temperature of the fluid is 300 K.

Air flow through the nozzle can be assumed to be inviscid and isothermal. Characteristic gas constant is 287 J/(kg-K) and ratio of specific heats is 1.4 for air.

To ensure that the air flow remains incompressible (Mach number, M≤0.3M \le 0.3) in the duct, the minimum area required at section Q is _____ m² (rounded off to two decimal places).

Figure for GATE 2022 AE question 53 (Aerodynamics)

Answer (official key): 0.14 to 0.15

Solution

a=1.4×287×300=347.2a = \sqrt{1.4 \times 287 \times 300} = 347.2 m/s, so VQ=104.2V_Q = 104.2 m/s. Isothermal Euler flow: ρQρP=exp⁡(−VQ2−VP22RT)=0.940\dfrac{\rho_Q}{\rho_P} = \exp\left(-\dfrac{V_Q^2 - V_P^2}{2RT}\right) = 0.940. Continuity: AQ=15×1104.2×0.940=0.15A_Q = \dfrac{15 \times 1}{104.2 \times 0.940} = 0.15 m².
