Q4 · General Aptitude · MCQ · 1 mark

In the given figure, the numbers associated with the rectangle, triangle, and ellipse are 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Which one among the given options is the most appropriate combination of P, Q, and R ?

Figure for GATE 2025 AE question 4 (Analytical Aptitude)

  • (A)
    P = 6; Q = 5; R = 3
  • (B)
    P = 5; Q = 6; R = 3
  • (C)
    P = 3; Q = 6; R = 6
  • (D)
    P = 5; Q = 3; R = 6

Answer (official key): A

Solution

Each region carries the sum of the numbers of the shapes containing it (e.g. rectangle ∩ ellipse = 1 + 3 = 4, as shown). P lies in all three shapes: 1+2+3=61 + 2 + 3 = 6. Q is in the triangle and ellipse: 2+3=52 + 3 = 5. R is in the rectangle and triangle: 1+2=31 + 2 = 3.

Q5 · General Aptitude · MCQ · 1 mark

A rectangle has a length L and a width W, where L > W. If the width, W, is increased by 10%, which one of the following statements is correct for all values of L and W?

  • (A)
    Perimeter increases by 10%.
  • (B)
    Length of the diagonals increases by 10%.
  • (C)
    Area increases by 10%.
  • (D)
    The rectangle becomes a square.

Answer (official key): C

Solution

Area =L×W= L \times W scales directly with WW, so it rises by exactly 10%. The perimeter 2(L+W)2(L + W) and diagonal L2+W2\sqrt{L^2 + W^2} rise by less, and the shape need not become a square.

Q38 · Flight Mechanics · MSQ · 2 marks

A general aviation airplane is initially in steady and level flight. The stability coefficient ∂Cm∂q\dfrac{\partial C_m}{\partial q} (CmC_m is the airplane pitching moment coefficient and qq is the pitch rate) is negative. The airplane is perturbed with a small nose-up constant pitch rate. Assume that the horizontal tail does not stall during the perturbation, and unsteady effects are neglected. When compared to steady and level flight condition, which of the following statements is/are true during the perturbed motion?

  • (A)
    The angle of attack of the horizontal tail increases.
  • (B)
    The contribution of the horizontal tail to the airplane’s pitching moment about the center of gravity is more stabilizing.
  • (C)
    The lift generated by the horizontal tail increases.
  • (D)
    The contribution of the horizontal tail to the airplane’s pitching moment about the center of gravity is less stabilizing.

Answer (official key): A, B, C

Solution

With a nose-up pitch rate the tail moves downward at q ltq\,l_t, adding an upward relative wind: its angle of attack and lift increase (A, C). That extra tail lift produces a nose-down moment opposing the pitch rate — pitch damping, a more stabilising contribution (B).

Q43 · Differential Equations · Numerical · 2 marks

Consider the ordinary differential equation:

12dydx+yx=1.\frac{1}{2}\frac{dy}{dx} + \frac{y}{x} = 1.

If y=2/3y = 2/3 at x=1x = 1, then the value of yy at x=3x = 3 is ______ (rounded off to the nearest integer).

Answer (official key): 2

Solution

y′+2yx=2y' + \dfrac{2y}{x} = 2 has integrating factor x2x^2: (x2y)′=2x2(x^2y)' = 2x^2, so x2y=23x3+Cx^2y = \tfrac{2}{3}x^3 + C. y(1)=2/3y(1) = 2/3 gives C=0C = 0, so y=2x3y = \tfrac{2x}{3} and y(3)=2y(3) = 2.

Q56 · Structures · Numerical · 2 marks

For a three-bar truss loaded as shown in the figure, the magnitude of the force in the horizontal member AB is ___N (answer in integer).

Figure for GATE 2025 AE question 56 (Structures)

Answer (official key): 25

Solution

Equilateral truss of side 1 m, 50 N horizontal at C, pin at A, roller at B. Moments about A: RB×1=50×0.866R_B \times 1 = 50 \times 0.866, so RB=43.3R_B = 43.3 N. At B: FBCsin⁡60°=43.3F_{BC}\sin 60° = 43.3 gives FBC=50F_{BC} = 50 N, and horizontal equilibrium gives FAB=FBCcos⁡60°=25F_{AB} = F_{BC}\cos 60° = 25 N.

Questions about GATE 2025 AE

How many questions are in the GATE 2025 AE paper?

65 questions for 100 marks: 10 General Aptitude questions worth 15 marks and 55 Aerospace Engineering questions worth 85 marks. By type, there were 35 MCQs, 2 MSQs, 28 numerical answer (NAT) questions. The paper lasted 3 hours.

Is there negative marking in GATE 2025 AE?

Yes, for MCQs only. A wrong MCQ answer costs one-third of its marks (−⅓ for a 1-mark question, −⅔ for a 2-mark question). MSQ and numerical (NAT) questions have no negative marking, and an MSQ earns marks only when every correct option is chosen.

Which topics carried the most marks in GATE 2025 AE?

Outside General Aptitude, the biggest topics were Aerodynamics (20 marks), Structures (19 marks), Propulsion (14 marks). The full topic-wise split is in the table on this page.

Were any GATE 2025 AE questions awarded marks to all?

No. Every question was graded with the answer in the official key.

Where does this GATE 2025 AE answer key come from?

From the official answer key published by IIT Roorkee, which organised GATE 2025. Range answers for numerical questions and questions with more than one accepted answer are kept exactly as the key gives them.
