Figure for GATE 2021 EE question 2 (Spatial Aptitude)

A transparent square sheet shown above is folded along the dotted line. The folded sheet will look like ________.

  • (A)
GATE 2021 EE question 2 (Spatial Aptitude), option A
  • (B)
GATE 2021 EE question 2 (Spatial Aptitude), option B
  • (C)
GATE 2021 EE question 2 (Spatial Aptitude), option C
  • (D)
GATE 2021 EE question 2 (Spatial Aptitude), option D

Answer (official key): C

Solution

The vertical stroke of the K lies left of the fold, while both arms cross it. Folding the right half over the left mirrors the parts of the arms beyond the fold. Each arm now meets the fold line at a point and goes back to the left twice: once to the stroke (original part) and once outward (mirrored part). This gives the two right-pointing wedges touching the fold, as in (C).

Q6 · General Aptitude · MCQ · 2 marks

The importance of sleep is often overlooked by students when they are preparing for exams. Research has consistently shown that sleep deprivation greatly reduces the ability to recall the material learnt. Hence, cutting down on sleep to study longer hours can be counterproductive.

Which one of the following statements is the CORRECT inference from the above passage?

  • (A)
Sleeping well alone is enough to prepare for an exam. Studying has lesser benefit.
  • (B)
Students are efficient and are not wrong in thinking that sleep is a waste of time.
  • (C)
If a student is extremely well prepared for an exam, he needs little or no sleep.
  • (D)
To do well in an exam, adequate sleep must be part of the preparation.

Answer (official key): D

Solution

The passage says lack of sleep hurts recall, so cutting sleep is counterproductive: adequate sleep must be part of the preparation (D). The other options go beyond or against the passage.

Q14 · Electric Circuits · MCQ · 1 mark

For the network shown, the equivalent Thevenin voltage and Thevenin impedance as seen across terminals ‘ab’ is

Figure for GATE 2021 EE question 14 (Electric Circuits)

  • (A)
    10 V in series with 12 Ω
  • (B)
    65 V in series with 15 Ω
  • (C)
    50 V in series with 2 Ω
  • (D)
    35 V in series with 2 Ω

Answer (official key): B

Solution

Open circuit: no current flows in the 2 Ω, so i1=5i_1 = 5 A and the 10 Ω carries 50 V. Adding the dependent source 3i1=153i_1 = 15 V gives Vth=50+15=65V_{th} = 50 + 15 = 65 V.

Test source: with the 5 A source removed, inject II at a. Then i1=Ii_1 = I and V=2I+3I+10I=15IV = 2I + 3I + 10I = 15I, so Rth=15 ΩR_{th} = 15\ \Omega.

Q18 · Electrical Machines · MCQ · 1 mark

Consider the table given:

Constructional featureMachine typeMitigation
(P) Damper bars(S) Induction motor(X) Hunting
(Q) Skewed rotor slots(T) Transformer(Y) Magnetic locking
(R) Compensating winding(U) Synchronous machine(Z) Armature reaction
(V) DC machine

The correct combination that relates the constructional feature, machine type and mitigation is

  • (A)
    P-V-X, Q-U-Z, R-T-Y
  • (B)
    P-U-X, Q-S-Y, R-V-Z
  • (C)
    P-T-Y, Q-V-Z, R-S-X
  • (D)
    P-U-X, Q-V-Y, R-T-Z

Answer (official key): B

Solution

  • Damper bars are used in synchronous machines against hunting (P-U-X).
  • Skewed rotor slots are used in induction motors against magnetic locking (cogging) (Q-S-Y).
  • Compensating windings are used in DC machines to neutralise armature reaction (R-V-Z).

Q24 · Electric Circuits · Numerical · 1 mark

In the given circuit, the value of capacitor C that makes current I=0I = 0 is __________ µF.

Figure for GATE 2021 EE question 24 (Electric Circuits)

Answer (official key): 20

Solution

I=0I = 0 needs the load after the series 10 Ω+j5 Ω10\ \Omega + j5\ \Omega to be an open circuit. So the shunt j5 Ωj5\ \Omega must be in parallel resonance with the branch j5−jXCj5 - jX_C:

j5+j5−jXC=0j5 + j5 - jX_C = 0, so XC=10 ΩX_C = 10\ \Omega and C=15000×10=20 μFC = \frac{1}{5000 \times 10} = 20\ \mu F.
