Q6 · General Aptitude · MCQ · 2 marks

At what time between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. will the minute hand and hour hand of a clock make an angle closest to 60∘60^\circ?

  • (A)
    6:22 a.m.
  • (B)
    6:27 a.m.
  • (C)
    6:38 a.m.
  • (D)
    6:45 a.m.

Answer (official key): A

Solution

At 6:mm, the hour hand angle from 12 is:

180+0.5m.180 + 0.5m.

The minute hand angle from 12 is:

6m.6m.

The angle between them is:

∣180−5.5m∣.|180 - 5.5m|.

For an angle of 60∘60^\circ:

180−5.5m=60180 - 5.5m = 60 5.5m=1205.5m=120 m≈21.82.m\approx21.82.

The closest option is 6:22 a.m.

Therefore, the correct answer is Option A.

The old city of Koenigsberg, which had a German majority population before World War 2, is now called Kaliningrad. After the events of the war, Kaliningrad is now a Russian territory and has a predominantly Russian population. It is bordered by the Baltic Sea on the north and the countries of Poland to the south and west and Lithuania to the east respectively.

Which of the statements below can be inferred from this passage?

  • (A)
Kaliningrad was historically Russian in its ethnic make up
  • (B)
Kaliningrad is a part of Russia despite it not being contiguous with the rest of Russia
  • (C)
Koenigsberg was renamed Kaliningrad, as that was its original Russian name
  • (D)
Poland and Lithuania are on the route from Kaliningrad to the rest of Russia

Answer (official key): B

Solution

The passage says Kaliningrad is Russian territory, but it is bordered by the Baltic Sea, Poland, and Lithuania. This implies that it is a part of Russia even though it is not contiguous with the rest of Russia.

Therefore, the correct answer is Option B.

Q29 · Compiler Design · MCQ · 1 mark

Consider the grammar defined by the following production rules, with two operators * and +:

S→T∗PS \to T * P T→U∣T∗UT \to U \mid T * U P→Q+P∣QP \to Q + P \mid Q U→idU \to id Q→idQ \to id

Which one of the following is TRUE?

  • (A)
+ is left associative, while * is right associative
  • (B)
+ is right associative, while * is left associative
  • (C)
Both + and * are right associative
  • (D)
Both + and * are left associative

Answer (official key): B

Solution

The production:

T→T∗UT \to T * U

is left-recursive, so * is left associative.

The production:

P→Q+PP \to Q + P

is right-recursive, so + is right associative.

Therefore, the correct answer is Option B.

Q35 · Probability and Statistics · Numerical · 1 mark

The security system at an IT office is composed of 10 computers of which exactly four are working. To check whether the system is functional, the officials inspect four of the computers picked at random without replacement. The system is deemed functional if at least three of the four computers inspected are working. Let the probability that the system is deemed functional be denoted by pp.

Then

100p=100p =

__________.

Answer (official key): 11.85 to 11.95

Solution

There are 10 computers, out of which 4 are working and 6 are not working.

The system is deemed functional if the selected 4 computers contain at least 3 working computers.

Favourable cases:

(43)(61)+(44)(60)=4⋅6+1=25.\binom{4}{3}\binom{6}{1}+\binom{4}{4}\binom{6}{0} = 4\cdot6+1=25.

Total ways:

(104)=210.\binom{10}{4}=210.

So:

p=25210.p=\frac{25}{210}.

Hence:

100p=2500210≈11.9048.100p=\frac{2500}{210}\approx 11.9048.

The official accepted range is 11.85 to 11.95.

Therefore, the answer is approximately 11.9.

Questions about GATE 2014 CS (Set 2)

How many questions are in the GATE 2014 CS (Set 2) paper?

65 questions for 100 marks: 10 General Aptitude questions worth 15 marks and 55 Computer Science & Information Technology questions worth 85 marks. By type, there were 42 MCQs, 23 numerical answer (NAT) questions. The paper lasted 3 hours.

Is there negative marking in GATE 2014 CS (Set 2)?

Yes, for MCQs only. A wrong MCQ answer costs one-third of its marks (−⅓ for a 1-mark question, −⅔ for a 2-mark question). MSQ and numerical (NAT) questions have no negative marking, and an MSQ earns marks only when every correct option is chosen.

Which topics carried the most marks in GATE 2014 CS (Set 2)?

Outside General Aptitude, the biggest topics were Discrete Mathematics (15 marks), Computer Networks (9 marks), Computer Organization and Architecture (9 marks). The full topic-wise split is in the table on this page.

Were any GATE 2014 CS (Set 2) questions awarded marks to all?

No. Every question was graded with the answer in the official key.

Where does this GATE 2014 CS (Set 2) answer key come from?

From the official answer key published by IIT Kharagpur, which organised GATE 2014. Range answers for numerical questions and questions with more than one accepted answer are kept exactly as the key gives them.
